My Top 4 Favorite Fashion Forward movies

Welcome back to Goddess Hour. I have been watching my favorite movies the last couple of weeks in order to unite myself with my authenticity. I have been feeling off since leaving New York unfortunately, and I think it has to do with the fact that I loved the city, fashion, and opportunities it had to offer. It felt like I visited my dreams for a short period of time, like I was on life’s high the whole trip, and as soon as I got back home I’ve just grieving my trip and the experiences I had. But it wont be long until I am attending school there and finally getting my foot in the door with the fashion industry- it’s all about patience *sigh*. It wasn’t until after watching all of these movies that I realized all of them are fashion forward. So I decided to create a blog post of my top 4 favorite fashion forward movies of all time and the brands or costume designers these movies represent. 

The Devil Wears Prada

I watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time two years after it came out. My mom recommended the movie to me and said it was ‘something up my alley’, and she was right. It was an interesting take on the fashion industry and felt realistic to me at the time since I was only around 10 years old. I thought the treatment of Andy was unfair until I got older and Fashion became my life. To have someone working in the fashion industry with no care for fashion and just using the job as a stepping stone towards another industry was understandably irritating. But Anne Hathaway’s character takes a turn and realizes that in order to gain respect is to respect the industry and dress for the part. Apparently when the movie first came out there were people in the industry that said that the junior assistants wouldn’t realistically dress in Chanel every single day, which makes sense considering how expensive Chanel is and the wages just don’t add up. But the outfits were on point and made sense for every character. Andy wore a lot of Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, and Calvin Klein. It goes to show Andy did have a sense of style since she favored certain brands, but it took the job with Runway to bring it out of her. Miranda Preisley wears a lot of Prada and it represents her sexy and sophisticated style. One of my favorite things about Miranda is that even though she was older she still dressed sexy in a modest way. She wore a lot of dresses, fur coats, and suits throughout the movie. Being a lover and a dreamer of New York City made the movie all the more close to my heart. Watching Andy strut down the busy roads of New York City wearing beautiful outfits made my dream even bigger. New York City was on my bucket list since I was five, so watching this movie gave me even more inspiration to go. It may sound crazy to some, but this movie ultimately inspired me to get into the fashion industry. 

A Simple Favor

This is one of my most recent favorite fashion forward movies. Even though the movie isn’t surrounded by love of fashion, the movie being a thriller with a French chic aesthetic was enough for me. Watching the movie for the first time felt like a wild ride. There was so much mystery during the whole movie that I couldn’t help but keep guessing the whole time. Blake Lively’s character, Emily, was by far my favorite character out of the whole movie. Emily was extremely blunt almost to the point it was off putting, but as someone who enjoys cutting right to the chase, I understood the mentality. Although Emily is absolutely a toxic person, I enjoyed the mystery, attitude, dominance, and carelessness for other people’s opinions. Emilys style consisted of a lot of mens suits with stilettos, and at the end of the movie she wore a 50’s inspired dress to portray herself as the perfect housewife in an ironic way. Most of the suits were from Ralph Lauren archives and Christian Louboutin. As for the accessories like the bow, clock chains, and some hats; they were all found at antique stores by the costume designer Renee Kalfus. I think one of the things I adore about Emily’s chic style is the fact that she was wearing men’s suits but still made it sexy. I felt that Emily was non binary and as someone whose pronouns are she/they, I absolutely felt this representation. As a lover of thrillers, mysteries, and fashion this is absolutely my go to movie. 

Clueless

One of the most iconic 90’s movies of all time. I first watched this movie when I was around 14 years old, I was late to the show, but the movie has never left my mind since. A lot of fashion critics say that this movie was the game changer for the fashion industry. I feel like this movie paved the way for fashion today. When I watch the movie back, all of the outfits still align with street fashion today, especially because the 90’s are in. But these outfits are timeless from Calvin Klein, Gucci, and of course, the memorable yellow Dolce and Gabbana plaid suit. 

But what makes the movie so iconic is how it is written so comically well. I live for the monologues; 

“what’re you wearing? 

“ A dress.”

 “Says who?” 

“Calvin Klein.” 

“It looks like underwear.” 

    Or

“In America we drive on the right side of the road”.

“I am, you try driving on platforms.”

    Or

“Shopping with Dr. Seuss?”

“Well at least I wouldn’t skin a Collie to make my backpack.”

The characters are witty and fashionable, I couldn’t ask for anything more. This movie makes me nostalgic even though I was born three years later after it came out; this movie lingered throughout my childhood and the teenagers during this time idolized the fashion that came from this movie and people today still do. 

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

This is THE movie of the 20th century. Even before I knew what breakfast at Tiffany’s was, I saw Audrey Hepburn’s picture of her wearing the iconic black dress plastered everywhere throughout my childhood and teenagehood. I knew people in high school who had posters and ‘canvas’ of her plastered around their room and they never even watched the movie. Thankfully I did not hop onto this bandwagon, but it did inspire me to watch the movie. I tried watching the movie when I was a teenager but for some reason I couldn’t get into it, so I never finished it. It wasn’t until I hit my 20’s that I finished it and I fell in love. I understood why everyone loved the movie so much and why it’s so iconic. The movie felt a bit racey to me only because of the fact it was made in the 60’s, and the main character was a call girl who fell in love with an escort, but that’s the reason I loved the movie so much. I felt like it broke traditions, but not only that, as someone who didn’t grow up with a lot of money, it was refreshing to see a broke fashionista living a fabulous life regardless of how much money she had. Her outfits consisted of a lot of dresses considering the time period it was in. Hubert De Givenchy, Edith Head, and The Paramount wardrobe contributed to some of the piece’s. The opening scene shows the main character wearing a black dress with matching gloves with a croissant and coffee in hand (that’s my girl). The dress was originally deemed too short and ‘revealing’ by the paramount wardrobe team, and they asked Givenchy if he could make it floor-length, which he then did. The accessories consisted of lampshade hats, hair brooches, pear necklaces, gloves, and of course, the iconic cigarette holder she used during the party scene. One of the most iconic movies and actors of all time. This movie will go down in history.
